Love after a Spinal Cord Injury
My husband and I started dating in high school. We both went off to college. We went our separate ways for a bit and then found our way back to each other. We have been married for 15 years. We have two precious children. Dylan is 11. Rylie Brooke is 6. In February of 2011, I was in a horrific car wreck that left me paralyzed from the waist down. I also suffered numerous other injuries.

We were living a nightmare. My husband moved to the Atlanta area to be with me for the next couple of months at Shepherd Center. It was hard for him to leave behind our then, 2 and 6 year old, who were being taken care of by other family members. He has definitely lived out his ‘for better or worse’. He has been there through the good, bad, and ugly.

My husband has seen me at my absolute worse and weakest. He has also been there to see me fall and rise time and time again. I’m the tough, hard-headed one. He is the calm in a raging storm. After a devastating blow to my spine that is forever damaged, he is the backbone that holds us all together. We have weathered storms that most couples would never dream of having to face. We have literally rolled through hell on Earth together. Blessed is a complete understatement. God definitely had his hand in it all.

In February of 2014, my accident month, I told my therapist that I wanted to dance with my husband again for Valentine’s Day. I had not been using my leg braces very long at this time. My therapist agreed that this was an attainable goal. We worked for months and months getting ready. I even had my daddy come to therapy and practice dancing with me.
The day had arrived. It was Valentine’s Day. We set up a surprise party in my dad’s garage. When Shane got off work, he knew to meet me there. He had no clue what was going on. I had my leg braces on and we told him. My entire family was there. Everyone was crying. It was such a bitter sweet day to be upright in his arms again.
I can’t imagine having to go through this life without him. I’m so thankful that he is the man behind this girls’ amazing story.
