On June 10, 1985, I turned 10 years old and received (what I consider still to this day the best gift ever) a 5'4" quad fin Stewart surfboard. The reason this was the best birthday gift I have ever received is that what began as a struggle turned into a career and passion.
The first summer I got that Stewart surfboard, I had such a difficult time learning that I nearly gave up. I went to the beach each and every day through August that summer. Every day I was hoping that I would catch the first wave and ride it to the beach. To my dismay, I couldn't seem to catch on. Toward the end of the summer, I was paddling into the shore and ready to give up when a wave hit me from behind and swooped me up. I quickly jumped to my feet, rode the wave to the shore, and as they say the rest is history.
I caught on to the sport very fast after that first wave. By the time I was 12 years old, I was competing on a national level and traveling throughout the East Coast, California, and Hawaii. I won numerous surfing titles including East Coast Champion in 1990.
During high school in the years between 1991 – 1993 I was part of the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) national team. We traveled internationally competing against other national organizations. After high school I surfed professionally until around age 26.
At the end of 2018, I received a phone call from an old surfing teammate telling me that I was nominated for the New Jersey surfing Hall of Fame. I received another phone call in March notifying me that I am to be inducted into the Hall of Fame on May 31, 2019. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. I have gone from the 10-year-old boy, that almost quit surfing when trying to learn, to the man 23 years later receiving the highest honor in New Jersey surfing. As life goes on, there are trials and tribulations, yet things like this accolade are what makes it all worthwhile.
